She is also a Licensed School Adjustment Counselor. Payton has worked in a variety of settings and across a range of levels of care throughout her career including outpatient mental health and community health centers, a wrap-around treatment program for high-risk adolescents, residential treatment center, therapeutic school, public schools, home-based services and in outpatient substance use treatment. Payton specializes in work with adults, adolescents and families struggling with the effects of abuse or assault, trauma and stressor-related disorders, depression, mood and anxiety disorders, relational and adjustment difficulties, complex bereavement, grief and loss, addiction issues, parenting, attachment and childhood mental health/behavioral concerns within families.

Payton was first drawn to the field of psychotherapy as an undergraduate during a psychoanalytic philosophy course. Analytic thinking as well as her background in the systematic study of fundamental human questions during the pursuit of her philosophy degree enliven Payton’s clinical practice and her passion for the work. Payton is a strong, compassionate believer in working to alleviate suffering in people’s lives and seeks to support and care for her clients with unconditional positive regard. This could be at any stage on a person’s journey toward healing and wellness. Some of us have not found the path yet, some are already traveling along it, some have lost their way and need help to find a new or safer course. Through empathy, compassionate collaboration, psychoeducation, proven effective techniques and guided self-discovery, Payton hopes to assist clients in becoming uplifted and empowered to meet their goals and feel well.

To do this, Payton uses a flexible, integrative psychotherapy approach based on a person’s presenting and identified needs. Payton’s approach draws from attachment and objection-relations theory, relational and psychodynamic processes, family systems and adaptive information processing theories. With her clients’ readiness, understanding and informed consent, Payton also incorporates evidenced-based practices to facilitate change, increase coping skills, decrease and alleviate symptoms, or facilitate processing/integration/recovery related to trauma. These techniques and practices include Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)/ Mindfulness-Based and Trauma-Focused CBT (MBCT and TF-CBT), Motivational Interviewing/Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MI/MET), Collaborative Problem Solving (CPS) and aspects of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT).
