ADHD in Children

Helping Children Focus, Learn, and Thrive

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common neurodevelopmental conditions diagnosed in childhood. Children with ADHD often struggle with attention, organization, hyperactivity, or impulsivity that can make school, friendships, and family life more challenging.

At Colony Care, we understand that ADHD is not simply a matter of willpower or discipline—it’s a difference in how the brain develops and processes information. With the right support and evidence-based treatment, children with ADHD can learn to manage their symptoms, build confidence, and reach their full potential.

Common ADHD Symptoms in Children

While every child has moments of inattention or high energy, those with ADHD experience these behaviors more often and more intensely. The core symptoms usually fall into three main categories:

Inattention

Children with ADHD may have trouble focusing on tasks, following instructions, or organizing their work. They might lose things easily, forget daily activities, or give up on assignments quickly—not out of defiance, but because it’s difficult for them to sustain attention.

Hyperactivity

A child experiencing hyperactivity may seem to be in constant motion—talking excessively, fidgeting, tapping, or getting up frequently even when expected to sit still. This restlessness often becomes most noticeable in structured settings like classrooms.

Impulsivity

Children with ADHD may interrupt others, blurt out answers, or act before thinking through consequences. They often struggle to wait their turn or may appear impatient or “driven by a motor.”

What Causes ADHD?

Decades of research show that ADHD is a neurobiological disorder—not the result of poor parenting or lack of effort. It tends to run in families and is linked to differences in the brain’s structure and function, particularly in areas that regulate attention and impulse control.

Environmental factors, such as premature birth, early life stress, or prenatal exposure to nicotine or alcohol, may increase risk, but genetics play the most significant role.

How We Treat ADHD

Our goal is to help each child develop the skills and self-awareness needed to succeed at home, in school, and in social settings. Treatment plans are individualized and may include one or more of the following approaches:

  • Therapy for Children: Behavioral therapy helps children understand their emotions, build self-control, and develop practical coping strategies.
  • Parent Coaching: We work with parents to create consistent routines, positive reinforcement systems, and supportive environments that set their child up for success.
  • Medication Management: When appropriate, medication can help balance brain chemistry and improve focus, attention, and self-regulation.
  • School Collaboration: We coordinate with teachers and school staff to support academic accommodations and behavioral strategies that help your child learn effectively.

With compassionate care and a comprehensive treatment approach, children with ADHD can grow into confident, capable learners and communicators.
